On Wednesday, May 18, KU Hillel European Leadership Mission participants joined Jewish Federation leadership at the home of Stacey Belzer, the chair of the Jewish Federation’s Leadership and Engagement committee.
For the past nine years, The Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City’s Israel and Oversees Committee has funded KU Hillel’s Overseas Leadership missions to Romania, Bulgaria and Israel to strengthen the partnership with their Jewish communities as well as invest in tomorrow’s leaders.
The evening started with a variety of Romanian dishes and desserts prepared by Belzer. Following dinner, a short video was shown highlighting KU Hillel’s European Leadership mission from this past January. Federation leaders and students then had the opportunity to exchange stories from their overseas travels and experiences.
“It was really cool to be able to meet with adults in the Kansas City area (a city I hope to grow my Jewish roots in) and learn how they were able to go abroad and continue the path of lifelong learning and cultural immersion,” says recent KU graduate Sam Benson.
“It was great to have a personal connection with some of those committee members on the basis that we shared these mutual experiences. All of these people, who were all friends, in one room reminded me a lot of Hillel, and I am excited to see that the classic Hillel experience can continue into adult life outside of college,” Benson adds.
“These trips are incredible opportunities for our top student leaders and we couldn’t do them without the Jewish Federation,” Lewis concludes.
