KU Hillel will honor KU Hillel’s past and current board presidents Bill Carr, Howard Cohen, Susie Greenberg, Eric Kaseff, Michael Novicoff, Miriam Scharf, Sheldon Singer and Donna Thalblum at its 15th annual Rock Chalk Shabbat.
For Susie Greenberg, this ceremony is a particularly special honor because of how much she loves Rock Chalk Shabbat.
When Greenberg was president, she tried to figure out ways to get parents involved with the organization. Under her leadership, Rock Chalk Shabbat transitioned from just a student program to a fundraising and networking event. She and other board members realized parents and families were eager to support KU Hillel by sponsoring tables and the event took off from there.
KU Hillel Executive Director Jay Lewis says he is thrilled to have the opportunity to thank Greenberg and the other Board Presidents he has worked so closely with over the last 16 years.
“I’m so glad that this is happening at Rock Chalk Shabbat this year. Their leadership stories will serve as an inspiration for our current student leaders on how you can build an impactful and effective organization,” Lewis says.
Lewis says he feels this recognition is long overdue and knows honoring the past board presidents will make this year’s Rock Chalk Shabbat a very special evening.
“None of the success we have had would have been possible without these phenomenal leaders,” Lewis says. “I have been so lucky throughout my tenure here to have them as my partners in building this special organization.”
Rock Chalk Shabbat brings together more than 500 students, parents, alumni, faculty, and community members for an incredible Shabbat experience. To help make the event a success, more than 150 students are involved in planning the evening, leading services, and serving dinner.
“I would like to encourage anyone that wants to experience a meaningful community event to join us for a special evening. We will not only celebrate the incredible work our past presidents have put into this organization over the years, but also enjoy the efforts of current KU students and their passion for Hillel. This event is certainly not just a Jayhawk alum evening-- we welcome and hope the entire Jewish community joins us for a memorable experience at Rock Chalk Shabbat,” says current KU Hillel board president Michael Novicoff.
Rock Chalk Shabbat takes place Friday, November 11 and is co-chaired by Arlene Kaseff and Stephanie Kavanaugh. The evening begins at 6:00 pm in the Kansas Union starting with dinner, followed by Shabbat services and an Oneg Dessert reception.
