Abby Chargo, a KU Hillel senior from Minnesota is spending her summer participating in an all-women’s learning and internship program. She will spend her mornings learning with other women from across the country and her afternoons working as the communications intern with The Israel Forever Foundation. The morning curriculum is designed to bring the women closer together to learn about Jewish law, feminism, kabbalah and the history of the Jewish nation. Chargo will also be participating in an Ulpan, an intensive learning program designed to help participants become fluent in the Hebrew language.
“I am hoping to gain a stronger foundation of my Jewish identity and observance,” Chargo said. “This is also an amazing professional opportunity and I’m so excited to dive into the Israeli culture.”
When asked how she plans to share her experience with her peers upon returning to Lawrence, Chargo said that she wants to continue to implement her Jewish learning into her every-day life. She also plans to use the professional skills that she gains in Israel to help strengthen the Jewish community at KU.
Chargo will be working this fall at Hillel as the Development Assistant and will utilize the marketing skills she is practicing in Israel to help Director of Development, Michelle Cole, with the promotional activity for Rock Chalk Shabbat this year.
Marlena Geller is another incoming senior who is spending her summer in Tel Aviv. Geller is interning with Fre Skincare through the Onward Israel program.
Onward Israel offers an immersive summer experience and provides students with exciting resume building opportunities including internships, service learning, academic study and fellowships. Most importantly, however, Onward Israel helps strengthen Jewish students’ connection to Israel and their Israeli peers.
“I am so excited to have the opportunity to work with a revolutionary skincare line,” Geller said.
Geller has had an interest in skin care and a passion for cosmetics for many years and has even garnered her own social media following on her Instagram account @beautysecretsbymj When asked what she hopes to gain from her experience, Geller said that she is looking forward to the professional growth and challenging herself in a new place.
Both Chargo and Geller agree that spending a summer in Israel will be a life-changing experience and want to encourage their peers to do the same!
