On Sunday, we left America to start our adventures in Romania and Bulgaria. Here is a run-down of our time traveling:
8:53pm: Five lines form at the Lufthansa gate in Chicago O’Hare airport to board our flight to Munich
9:00pm: We enter the plane and find our seats.
9:30pm: Time to take off! …or so we think.
10:00pm: The captain makes an announcement and says we need to de-ice the plane and then we’ll be on our way. We believe him.
10:30pm: The plane pulls away from the gate. We are anxious yet excited to embark on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
11:00pm: After driving around for what seemed to be an hour, the captain’s voice, again, comes on the speaker, “we need to return to the gate to de-ice; there were no open runways for us, and now the plane has ice on it again. We also need to refuel”
11:20pm: After driving all the way back to the gate from what seemed to be miles away, the plane gets de-iced again and refueled, which seems to take forever.
12:00am: HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARGO!!!! (We are still on the ground by the way)
12:02am: The captain finally announces, “prepare for take-off”
12:10am: We are up in the air!! It is time to start our amazing adventure.
From here, we landed in Munich to confirm our growing suspicions that we missed our connecting flight to Bucharest. We were rebooked for a flight seven hours later at 10:30pm and told we had time to explore Munich, Germany… from the comfort of the H and L terminals of the Munich International Airport. What a time! We snacked on pretzels and bit into brats; the true German experience.
As the birthday girl, I had considered getting a drink on the plane at 12am. However, some wise words from fellow ELM-er, Lizzie Altman, made me rethink my decision.
I mentioned it was my 21st birthday to the flight attendants and thought nothing of it. But, what made my birthday really sweet was the Lufthansa staff bringing me a little cake and singing happy birthday to me. The flight attendants took a Polaroid pic of myself, my seat-mate, Kara Kahn and Logan Cole. Along with some plane-shaped fruit snacks and chocolate bars, they gave me the picture and wished me a very happy birthday.
Longest birthday of my life but happy to finally be spending it in Romania!
